What is llms.txt,
and do you need one?
Short answer: it is cheap to add and might help, but it is not a must-have yet. Here is why.
What it is
llms.txt is a plain text file placed at the root of a website (yourbusiness.com/llms.txt). It was proposed in 2024 as a simple way to give AI tools a short summary of a site and links to its most useful pages, written in Markdown so both people and machines can read it.
Who uses it
This is the honest part: it is a proposal, not an official standard, and there is little public evidence so far that the major AI assistants rely on it. Some developer tools and documentation sites use it, and adoption is growing, but you should not expect it to change how often you are recommended on its own.
So should you add one?
If it takes you ten minutes, yes. It costs nothing, it forces you to write down what your business does in plain words, and if more tools start reading it you are ready. Just do the basics first: make sure agents are not blocked, your key facts are in the page itself, and you have structured data. Those matter more today.
